(Plus, you could win a fabulous prize)

Dr. Francis and Wild About Smiles are celebrating summer by holding two contests — Wild About Reading and Wild About Hiking — to encourage young children to establish healthy lifestyle habits that include reading and exercise.

From July 1-August 11 (a 6-week duration), children between 5 and 11 years old can participate in this fun and friendly competition by logging their reading time and outdoor walking or hiking time. At the end of the contest period (logs must be received by August 15), Dr. Francis will award an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite plus a $50 Amazon gift card to the child with the most accumulated reading minutes, and a $200 REI gift card to the child with the most accumulated outdoor walking and hiking minutes. Children may choose to participate in either or both contests.

Dr. Francis is ‘wild’ about reading and outdoor recreation in young children and developed the contest as a way to offer kids extra encouragement to embrace these beneficial activities and possibly even encourage lifelong healthy habits.

“I’ve always been the dentist who wanted books and coloring activities in my office, not TVs and video games,” he explains. “Activities that encourage creativity and stimulate growing brains and bodies is so important, and I want our office to be part of a child’s positive and beneficial experience.”

Dr. Francis is realistic about the contest outcomes, but optimistic as well. “I know kids are motivated by prizes, but if one child discovers they like reading more than they thought or finds new joy in exploring the outdoors, I will consider this contest a success.”

Any 5- to 11-year-old child living in Northern Nevada or Northeastern California can participate in the contest, whether they are a patient of Wild About Smiles or not. Click to see complete contest details.
